AS2560 sports lighting changes

The Australian Standard 2560 Sports Lighting, Part 2: Specific Applications was published on the 27th August 2021 and sets out the performance requirements for lighting for specific sports. Many of the performance standards have changed from the previous version, affecting most sporting facilities in Australia. They have also included additional sports which weren’t previously covered by the standards. This paper sets out the new standards and key changes so you are aware when looking to upgrade your lights and to keep your site compliant.

 

Key changes

• Separation of sports into group A and B with different standards.
• Introduction of maximum glare rating.
• Introduction of minimum colour rendering index (CRI).
• Introduction of U1 and U2.
• Introduction of Group B state/national competition.
• Local/regional competition – higher requirement on uniformity from 0.50 to 0.60u.

 

Key changes

• Introduction of uniformity gradient.

 

Key changes

• Introduction of mid-level standards.
• Introduction of maximum glare ratings.
• Introduction of uniformity U1 and U2.
• International and national competition with large spectators – lux levels have increased from 200 to 500 and higher uniformity required.

 

Key changes

• Introduction of maximum glare ratings.
• Introduction of minimum CRI.
• Introduction of uniformity U1 and U2.
• Lux levels have increased for: training; club competition – softball/baseball; and softball – national.

 

Key changes

• National and international – lux levels have decreased from 1,000/800 to 750/500.
• Recreational and residential – CRI has changed from 20 to 65.

• Introduction of minimum CRI.
• Introduction of uniformity U1 and U2.
• Introduction of uniformity gradient.
• Ball and physical training – lux level has increased from 30 to 200, uniformity has increased 0.25 to 0.60.
• Club level competition – lux level has increased from 250 to 300, uniformity has increased from 0.60 to 0.70.

 

Key changes

• Separation of recreation and competition levels.
• Competition – lux level has increased from 100 to 200.

 

Key changes

• Introduction of completely new and novel standards for cricket.
